Children’s vision
Caring for your child’s eyes
Your child’s eyesight affects more than their ability to see. Hand eye coordination, sports performance, school performance and confidence can all be affected by poor vision in childhood.
Our eyes develop in the first eight years of life, so it’s important that any problems are detected as early as possible. Your child experiences may changes in their early years and we want to make sure that good vision is a natural part of that process.
If there is a history in your family of squints, ‘lazy eyes’, or spectacle wear from an early age it is especially important to have a full eye test, even if they have a nursery or school screening – ideally by the age of two. We have tests specially designed for young children and they don’t have to be able to read the letter chart.
Reading difficulties
Reading difficulties often resolve with practice or extra tuition. Reading with your child is recommended by all education experts.
For some children (and adults) however, the reading text can appear jumbled and confusing. This pattern glare with black writing on a white background is often known as Irlen’s syndrome. Further information can be found on coloured Lenses and overlays here.
